The 2020 Auckland Council Ōrewa beach sand replenishment took place on Tuesday, but due to stormy weather, lasted just days. A “cliff” up to 1.8 metres high has formed on a north Auckland beach after bad weather hit the area. Waves washed away thousands of cubic metres of sand at Ōrewa beach just days after it was laid, frustrating some locals. Contractors deposited the sand on Tuesday as part of Auckland Council’s latest effort to combat erosion in the area. Chris McKeen/Stuff Ollie, 6, of Orewa, enjoys jumping off a bank onto the beach after recent storms eroded a length of Ōrewa beach, in north Auckland.
