With St Étienne and Lyon both in crisis, this one meant more than most. As it turned out, St Étienne boss Ghislain Printant did not even make it to the weekend. He had served as Gasset’s assistant, was a respected coach and enjoyed strong support from the St Étienne players, who backed his appointment and thought he would continue Gasset’s fine work. Although this win was a grind, Puel now has the platform to build something with St Étienne. Elsner’s team are currently above Lyon, St Étienne and Monaco in the table, so maybe he was a safer bet than people thought.
