The Thai government insisted its soldiers carried out the attack in retaliation after they were shot at by Cambodian soldiers, pushing bilateral tensions to a new low. In the following weeks, more Thai soldiers were injured by landmines as they patrolled areas along the border with Cambodia. Across both rounds of fighting, dozens of Thai soldiers and civilians were killed, while hundreds were injured and thousands were forced to evacuate to shelters.
