David Mayhew, one of the legends of the City of London in recent decades, has been brought out of retirement by Akzo Nobel in an attempt to shore up the tattered reputation of the Dulux paints group. The former Cazenove banker, who in the past has been in takeover battles with both Sir Jimmy Goldsmith and Sir Philip Green and who was caught up in the Guinness scandal nearly 30 years ago, has been appointed as a special adviser by Akzo Nobel after a bruising takeover encounter with PPG, an American rival.
