City pulls sap taps from Old North resident's front yard

Instead of the regular spring routine of travelling to his family's cottage near the Niagara Escarpment to tap maple trees for sap, he'd do it from home. Phipps wasn't aware there was a bylaw against hammering things into city trees, but he removed the taps without a fuss. Mark Phipps said city forestry officials asked him to remove the taps from his front-yard trees on Thursday. He'd been using the sap to make maple syrup. (Andrew Lupton/CBC)"We were teaching our daughter how to make maple syrup to see how food goes from your source to the table," he said.
