Citizens to prepare for a "fourth wave" in autumn, says Yuen Kwok-yung

HKU’s leading microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung urges the public to be prepared for aHKU’s leading microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung has called for a higher participation rate in the citywide mass testing. In a radio program, the government adviser said Hong Kong has paid a “heavy price” in suppressing the third wave of the Covid-19 outbreak, calling it a “bitter victory”. He said the city has reported more than 3,000 cases and around 70 deaths since the virus’s latest wave battered the SAR in early-July, and the city has already paid a huge price even if the number of confirmed cases dropped within the following weeks. Yuen also warned citizens to brace for another wave of the outbreak in the autumn as he expects the epidemic to persist for another six months to a year, adding that officials need to ensure control at the border is “watertight” as the third wave was caused by imported cases from Southeast Asian countries. Yuen suggested those who recovered from the virus to continue wearing masks, citing the possibility of re-infections as shown in studies.
