Cities around the world go dark for Earth Hour

Toronto plunged into darkness on Saturday in observance of Earth Hour. The event began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, and ran from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time worldwide. Social media users across Toronto used the hashtag #EarthHour to commemorate the event, resulting in it trending on Twitter throughout the night. The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) reported more than 3.5 billion impressions were recorded on the #EarthHour social media hashtag, and trended in more than 30 countries last year. Research from the WWF shows that the planet is currently on track to lose 67 per cent of wildlife populations by 2020.
