Dr. Hrabowski said he was most proud that it had been able to flourish over the years at a predominantly white institution. The school’s balance of athletics and academics is perhaps its most valuable asset, said Kafui Dzirasa, who obtained a degree in chemical engineering from U.M.B.C. Dr. Dzirasa was a conference champion in the long jump, but was also an academic All-American. Dr. Hrabowski wonders if the basketball team’s newfound fame will be it. “I guess we don’t ever want to arrive,” Dr. Hrabowski said.
