Church of Ireland to end investments in fossil fuel companies

The Church of Ireland has made a significant advance to end its investments in all fossil fuels at its General Synod in Armagh. In 2011, its investment funds exposure to fossil fuels was at 10 per cent and by this year it is down to 2.5 per cent. Church of Ireland’s investments are managed by its Representative Church Bod, which was established in 1870 as the charitable trustee of the church. While many Anglican churches have divested from coal and tar-sands, the most polluting fossil fuels, the Church of Ireland was one of the first to exclude all fossil fuels, Mr Trew said. “Let us mark the day when, with God’s help, we decided that the Church of Ireland is truly an ethical investor and excludes all fossil fuels,” he said.
