SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas—Almost every Sunday, Ann Montgomery is in a pew at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, where she has attended services since 1987. But this week, Ms. Montgomery and her husband woke up feeling unwell and stayed home. Courtnie Lee, 25, another regular parishioner who is pregnant with her seventh child, couldn’t get her husband out of bed. They too skipped church.
