An 18-year-old harpist from Aberdeen has been named as the joint winner of The Times Christmas carol competition (Gabriella Bennett writes). Rachel Groves composed Joy last year as a Christmas present for her father. She will play the piece at Cadogan Hall in London next month, as part of the Bach Choir’s Carols at Cadogan night, with the competition’s other winner, Tim Scott. Judges stated they were unable to choose between the two due to the high quality of both compositions. “Quite a few people from the choir have said they thought the carol was unusual.
