A decade on from a huge earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami in Japan, memories are still raw for many. To commemorate the tragedy, the World Peace Bell Association will hold a memorial service in Christchurch on Thursday. Tanigawa was in Japan when the quakes struck but was very conscious of what was happening in Christchurch at the time. “I am most grateful that the World Peace Bell will be rung in a memorial to remember the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake,” Tanigawa said. Suzuki is also determined to ensure she tells her 15-year-old daughter of the impact of the Tōhoku earthquake and to remind her of the power of natural disasters.
