Even starker alternatives can now enter the race without fear of splitting the not-Ford vote. It’s frustrating as hell that the Family Ford’s brand of know-nothing pay-less-and-get-more subways-subways-subways populism has so much currency in this city. Even the late Pam McConnell, a much-missed voice of reason on council’s left, found her way to supporting a redesigned version. If a left-wing candidate can’t figure that out, “victory” in Scarborough or on the Gardiner won’t be worth much in the long run. With or without Doug Ford in the race, or on council, I’m not at all convinced it can be done.
