This week, the Halton Catholic School Board, traditionally one of the more conservative boards, voted down a gay-friendly anti-bullying policy. At Toronto’s Thorncliffe Park school, 40 per cent of Grade 1 students are learning sex ed under a fairly significant “accommodation,” the Toronto Star recently reported. As parents often tell me — some approvingly, some not — Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic schools really aren’t all that Catholic. And as silly as I consider any sex-ed class that won’t use the words “penis” or “vagina,” I agree it’s better those kids are still in public school than not. Hopefully they were exaggerating, because at Thorncliffe Park that’s out the window.
