That was B.C.’s third electoral reform referendum; no one seems to be contemplating a fourth. No doubt some were about the proposed system — for example the reliance on party lists and the much larger ridings. After all, Legault’s party won 59 per cent of the seats in the National Assembly and 37 per cent of the popular vote. In short, there is no reason to extrapolate from anglophone Canada’s referendums the inevitable failure of one in Quebec. But for anyone in a position to change that system, that discrepancy is likely to be a powerful incentive not to.
