Chris Selley: Don’t act surprised that the Liberals are flip-flopping on electoral reform

To realists — not cynics, realists — the likeliest outcome of the Liberals’ electoral reform consultations was always obvious: a lack of electoral reform. “Under Stephen Harper, there were so many people unhappy with the government and their approach that people were saying, ‘It will take electoral reform to no longer have a government we don’t like,’ ” he ruminated. “But under the current system, they now have a government they’re more satisfied with and the motivation to change the electoral system is less compelling.”Talk about projection. But if either theory is true, what we are seeing here is politicians playing silly buggers with the way we elect them under the idealistic banner of electoral reform. It is a far worse, far less defensible way to enact electoral form than first-past-the-post is to elect MPs.
