Cooper’s disastrously conceived rebuttal involved naming the Christchurch mosque attacker and reading passages of his manifesto into the committee record. Others have observed that the passages Cooper read were almost certainly disingenuous — an attempt to lure people into pointless, divisive arguments over his true intentions. “Conservatism is corporatism in disguise, I want no part of it,” Cooper read. You have to look up news reports to find out what was actually said — and in 1993, perhaps, members didn’t see the internet coming. It’s disturbing committee members would believe Canadians might be impressed by such an attempt to alter history — and even more disturbing that they might be right.
