I hope I’m not spoiling things when I say that Noah Baumbach’s new film, Marriage Story, is about a divorce. But well-meaning mediation will only take you so far, as they learn when Nicole heads to Los Angeles to work in television, while Charlie remains with his theatre company in New York. Nicole falls into the clutches of a lovely, nurturing, predatory divorce lawyer played to perfection by Laura Dern. They can make us believe in the love they once had, even though we’re now seeing only its attenuated remains. Baumbach’s cinematic maturity and mastery is on full display.
