Covid-19 response minister Chris Hipkins’ slip of the tongue has won the New Zealand Quote of the Year competition, edging out a toddler’s profane response to seeing a goat. Hipkins’ accidental encouragement for New Zealanders to go outside to “spread their legs”, instead of stretching them, at a press conference in August, found favour with voters. It pipped No, it’s a f...... goat!”, from footage of a Christchurch mother and her two-year-old daughter seeing a goat in their garden, which scored 38.4 per cent of the vote. The toddler and the goatRunner-up “No, it’s a f…... goat!” was an unusual quote for the top 10 because of the speaker’s young age. New Zealand’s Quote of the Year competition began in 2011.
