We’re trying not to get too over-excited about Chris Boyd. You readers want balance and context, don’t you, and you don’t want your sportswriters jumping at the latest bright young thing. Being suitably measured, in this newspaper on Monday, Stuart Barnes wrote about Boyd and his Northampton Saints and said that “this is not the column anointing them as the next champions”. However, he did cut loose a bit, describing Boyd as “the antithesis, perhaps even the antidote, to the robotic rubbish of rugby’s excessive systems”. That was a rather decent thing to say, I said to Boyd when I met him the next day.
