They found that 87% of white married women in Muncie spent four hours or more on daily housework. National time use diary studies from 1975, 1985, and 1995 also showed a steep drop in the amount of time women spent on housework. That year, 97% of married men said they helped with housework; only 75% of married women said their husbands helped! A 1997 Washington Post/Kaiser/Harvard survey asked people whether their husband, wife, or partner spent more or less time than the respondent in 10 household chores. Imbalances in household chores are real, but polls suggest that they are a minor irritant in most American households.
