In 2005, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston had given Kelly its college assistant of the year award. In March 2006, Kelly had visited Eugene, Ore., and studied with Crowton, the two sharing notes through the fall. Bellotti chose Kelly that Feb. 9 from a very short list, then moved to athletic director two seasons on and left the job to Kelly.
