BEIJING—China’s car sales grew at their fastest rate in more than two years in August, driven by heavy discounts and new-model debuts, adding momentum to a second-half recovery in the world’s largest auto market after a pandemic-disrupted first six months of the year. Retail passenger-car sales in the country increased by 8.9% last month from a year earlier to 1.7 million vehicles, the China Passenger Car Association said Tuesday, marking the strongest rate of growth since May 2018.
