Chinese automakers have no patience for the low-price, incremental growth strategy that worked for the Japanese and Koreans. “We won’t come out like the Japanese and Koreans did”, a supply chain director at a Chinese electric vehicle maker told me recently. The Chinese are betting on a high tech, premium price approach as they push into markets in Europe and America. The plan is to build high-end electric buses for green-tilting cities in the Netherlands, the U.K. and France as diesels fade from the picture. A young Chinese electric bus maker setting up production in California – who would have predicted such a thing?
