China's engagement and support in Africa was for many years an extension of political relations. For example, Africa's natural resources played a large role in China's growth for decades. China has also increased its involvement in African multilateral funding agencies, by joining the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank and the West African Development Bank. Through the AfDB, it has pledged to contribute a total of US$996 million to the African Development Fund.
