H Wujing FilmOn Saturday, its 31st day in release, Wolf Warrior 2 earned $5.68 million, enough to drive its cumulative box office collections in China past the rarefied $800 million mark. Only one other movie, 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has ever reached such lofty heights in a single territory. As of Sunday, Wolf Warrior 2’s China gross reached $809.2 million, and it is still going strong. But it’s unlikely that it will clear the additional $127.5 million it needs to surpass the Star Wars record. As much as mainland Chinese movie audiences may adore Wolf Warrior 2, it will fizzle in overseas markets, where its thin plotting, extremely gratuitous violence, and off-putting ultra-nationalism will make it virtually unwatchable for most audiences.
