China blocks Washington Post, Guardian sites

The two newspapers were among the last major English news sites still accessible to mainland Chinese residents, according to a report in The Post. Other blocked outlets include Bloomberg, The New York Times, Reuters, and The Wall Street Journal, according to Business Insider, an Indian newspaper. The websites of The Post and The Guardian appear to be blocked as China further tightens its so-called "Great Firewall" censorship apparatus as it navigates a politically sensitive period, reports The Straits Times, a daily newspaper based in Singapore. The Straits Times website has been blocked since late last month. The Chinese authorities have said that their censorship practices are a matter of the country's "Internet sovereignty" and not negotiable with foreign governments.
