On March 22, President Trump announced trade actions under Section 301. Subsequently the United States Trade Representative (USTR) proposed tariffs amounting to $50 billion on imports from China. The objective of the US additional tariffs seems to be targeted at penalising China for its alleged unfair intellectual property practices and at reducing the trade deficit. For almost a decade, trade imbalance with China and its alleged unfair trade practices have dominated US electoral discourse. China announced that they would impose additional tariffs on agricultural commodities such as Soybeans, Corn, Cotton,Tobacco and automobiles.
