Earlier today, May 9, an uncontrolled piece of Chinese rocket debris crashed into the Indian Ocean, narrowly avoiding the islands. If any two were to collide, the results could be catastrophic, creating thousands of new pieces of dangerous space junk. The chances of you being hit by space junk are exceedingly low, perhaps one in several trillion – but the chances of damage being caused are much less remote. But it is a stark reminder of the space junk problem. And while China’s space junk crashed into the ocean when it returned to Earth, will the next?
