Chief executives need to learn humility

It’s not a surprise that chief executives value being in charge, enjoy accruing status, and like being on top. Self- oriented chief executives claim bigger pay packets yet studies have shown that the size of a chief executive’s remuneration is only weakly related to shareholder return. More importantly, in organisations led by humble chief executives its top management team is more likely to share information, collaborate, and possess a shared vision. In the two years following a new chief executive appointment female chief executives outperformed those with men by an average of 20 per cent. What’s notable is that the study on humble chief executives was conducted in China, where valued leadership traits have a Confucian philosophical basis.
