Kenya's medal drought persisted at the World Athletic Championships as as the best Kenyan in the women's 3000m steeplechase, Celliphine Chespol finished a distant 13th. Chespol started the race well keeping in touch with the leaders but faded badly to clock a sluggish 9:27.34. The Kenyan-born Norah Jeruto now representing Kazakhstan bagged gold after controlling the race superbly from the start in a championship record in 8:53.02. Commonwealth Games' 800m champion Wycliffe Kinyamal was placed second in his heat after posting 1:45.08. Gabriel Tual of France came second in 1:46.34.
