Gemma King was overwhelmed by her first encounter with an effigy of her head at the Chelsea Flower Show. It was not only the first time she had seen the sculpture that dominates the Myeloma UK garden but it was also a reminder of the disease that killed her mother and uncle within four months. The sculpture, made from layers of arctic blue Perspex stacked to 12ft, is the work of the landscape gardener John Everiss, who was commissioned to design a space for the charity fighting a type of cancer that kills a fifth of sufferers within 60 days of diagnosis. It represents Mother Nature, blowing seed to offer hope of new growth. Most gardens at the show are the result of corporate sponsorship…
