Former National Sevens champions Mwamba launch their Driftwood Sevens title defence against University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine on Saturday at the Mombasa Sports Club. Mwamba, the Plate runners-up at Prinsloo and Kabeberi Sevens, take on the varsity students who have been invited to feature in the division one competition by hosts Mombasa at 11.30am. Mwamba will then renew rivalry with Menengai Oilers at 1.54pm before wrapping up day one action against Strathmore Leos at 4.54pm in a duel that is likely to decide Pool “C” winners. Interestingly, Mwamba and Menengai Oilers have met twice in the pool stages at the Prinsloo and Kabeberi Sevens, both matches ending in 7-7 and 12-12 stalemates. Menengai Oilers are being handled by former Nakuru head coach Gibson Weru, who won last year’s Series with the Great Rift side.
