Anna Soubry is left leading a group of five MPs but the other six, including the interim leader Heidi Allen and the lead spokesman Chuka Umunna, have become independents as they consider whether to jump ship to the Liberal Democrats. Joining Ms Allen, a former Tory, and Mr Umunna, a former Labour leadership candidate, in quitting yesterday were the ex-Tory Sarah Wollaston and the ex-Labour MPs Luciana Berger, Gavin Shuker and Angela Smith.
