Challenges and opportunities for North Galway farmers debated in GlenamaddySUCCESSION planning, early retirement programmes, the price of cattle, dairy farming, time-consuming paperwork and enticing more young people into farming were some of the points discussed at an open meeting in Glenamaddy Community Centre last week. Galway Rural Development (GRD) and the HSE came together to organise the forum which attracted farmers from Glenamaddy, Dunmore, Williamstown, Cortoon and Clonberne. “Eighteen years ago, there was a meeting held in a village up the road from here in Kilkerrin, and out of that meeting came the Rural Social Scheme (RSS),” said Sean Broderick, who chaired the meeting in Glenamaddy on Tuesday of last week and is the RSS and Tús Coordinator with GRD.
