Just days after West Bengal Governor met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Centre on Saturday sought a report from the Mamata Banerjee government on measures taken to contain political violence and investigate such incidents of violence to arrest the culprits. According to the MHA, the number of incidents of political violence in West Bengal increased from 509 in 2016 to 1035 in 2018. More than 700 incidents of political violence has already occurred in 2019. Government of India is seriously concerned over the prevalent situation in West Bengal," the advisory read. This is the second such advisory sent by the Centre to the state, with the last one being dismissed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who claimed that there “was no law and order problem in Bengal."
