Centre ponders over extension for Jung

Sources indicated that thinking in the government seems to be veering around to the opinion that three years is the right time to revisit appointment to the key post. As many as 14 former LGs lasted less than three years. New Delhi: As lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung enters his fourth year in office amid an emerging view in the government that LG 's appointment is best visited every three years, questions are being asked as to whether Jung will be allowed to continue in Delhi for longer. The maximum tenure of Delhi LG, or for that matter any governor or lieutenant governor, is not defined under the Constitution. Home ministry sources said on Friday "the tenure of Delhi LG has not been laid down and as per convention/practice is at discretion of the President".Though the terms of past LGs of Delhi have ranged from three months to over six years, as many as 14 of the total 18 had a tenure short of three years. LG virtually runs Delhi as a representative of the Centre , exclusively handling key functions like public order, police and land, even as the chief minister must contend with limited powers.Modi government's aversion to giving extended terms to those occupying key posts was on vivid display recently when it refused to assure RBI governor Raghuram Rajan that his tenure would be extended.
