Centre extends judicial scrutiny

On November 18, the collegium had iterated 37 of the 43 names on which the Centre had sought "reconsideration". The collegium reaffirmed the 37 names and decided to take a "re-look" at the remaining six. The government sources said that despite the collegium iterating the names, the Centre was not keen on giving immediate clearance to the 37. At present, the sanctioned strength of judges in high courts in the country is 1,079 whereas the actual working strength is only 649. The Supreme Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 31 judges, has seven vacancies.
