Central North Island road closed indefinitely after underslip cracks road

A state highway has been shut until further notice after a slip caused a massive crack in the road, which has since caved away down a hill. The NZ Transport Agency closed State Highway 4 between Raetihi and the intersection with Fields Track on Thursday. MARK BRIMBLECOMBE PHOTOGRAPHY SH4, near Whanganui, is closed after a slip left the road impassable. A spokesperson said an underslip took place the weekend prior, with a crack in the road caused by the slip becoming worse in subsequent days. Detours for light vehicles are via State Highway 1 and Field Track, while heavy vehicles should use SH1 and SH49.
