Another of my all-time favourites was another East Takaka local, Beryl Gladys Rogers, who passed away at the Golden Bay Community Hospital in May. For a brief moment in time, it became the local Post Office. Beryl left school at 14 so she could start at the East Takaka Post Office as an assistant to Post Master Laurie Barnett. In 1919, the Post Office was then moved to Jim Franklyn’s house opposite the Church, but early one morning in 1936 the house was destroyed along with much of the Post Office stores and equipment. Hayley Gale/Supplied East Takaka residents Beryl Rogers, left, and Carol Wells were active in organising celebrations for the church's 140th anniversary back in 2008.
