Catholic church gears for change

By WANJOHI GITHAEMore by this AuthorThe recent appointment of Kitui Bishop Anthony Muheria as Nyeri Archbishop combined with the impending retirement of some key leaders has opened debate on possible changes in the Catholic Church in Kenya. When a bishop or archbishop is 75 years he writes to the Pope in Vatican seeking permission to retire. Late last year, Archbishop Peter Kairu of Nyeri Archdiocese wrote to the Pope and last month his letter was accepted and his place taken by Archbishop Muheria. FINAL CALLThe Church has an elaborate procedure of elevation of bishops and archbishops established under the Canon law, or the law of the Catholic church, which is followed before the Pope makes the final call. CREATION OF CARDINALSThe apostolic Nuncio or the Pope’s ambassador to a country plays a big part in ordination of bishops, appointment of archbishops and creation of cardinals.
