It’s been less than a month since European Union legislation took effect requiring all new cars to have the eCall system, which automatically calls emergency services in the event of an accident. But already, emergency operators are identifying teething problems. The eCall system automatically calls 112, the European equivalent of America’s 911, after a collision. That number is automatically redirected to local emergency services across the EU. It then uses Galileo, the EU’s equivalent of America’s GPS satellite system, to send information about the vehicle’s location to emergency services.
