Carnivorous southern volutes tempt young beachgoers

As this species is normally found from Cook Straight southwards, they are called southern volutes. Large specimens reach 150mm in lengthAll volutes are carnivorous and feed mainly on small bivalve shellfish. When out feeding, volutes have a large flattened foot and a distinct head with eyes, a mouth and tentacles. There are at least eight species of volutes in New Zealand waters. The southern volutes in the photograph were discovered after a storm on a Southland beach.
