This father figure hasn’t been torn down by the masses, but by the few. In an authoritarian manner, the church entrenched patriarchal structures throughout Irish society. The Wild Laughter shows the patriarch to still be at large. However, the beloved, beneficent father figure in the novel isn’t this patriarch.
