Canterbury University scientists on verge of climate-friendly breakthroughs

Researchers at Canterbury University believe they are on the verge of a breakthrough in a project to substitute fossil fuels with green hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide. The current thinking is their system could produce climate-friendly hydrogen and carbon dioxide at scale in about a decade. The researchers placed the cutlery, which was previously thought to be “non-foamable” plastic, into a chamber filled with carbon dioxide. When they suddenly released the pressure in the chamber, the carbon dioxide expanded within the plastic, creating foaming. “By tweaking the temperature and pressure, there is a window where we can make good foams,” he says.
