As normality shuddered to a halt, people’s relationships changed and livelihoods disappeared, the effects on Kiwis’ mental health began to be felt. GPs and community mental health services were seeing fewer people presenting with problems. The region’s quake experience has already been used for a Covid mental health project. Stuff Canterbury’s “All Right?” campaign is being used as a model for the “Getting through together” Covid mental health campaign. Beth Nobes, acting general manager at Christchurch’s Mental Health Advocacy Peer Support agency, agrees that Cantabrians went into the Covid crisis with an advantage.
