Cannes finally embraces TV and online rivals: Howell

Twin Peaks is coming to Cannes, as the world’s most prestigious film festival finally embraces television and other small-screen rivals. Following the lead of TIFF, Sundance and other major fests, Cannes is belatedly acknowledging the popularity of prestige productions by major directors that play on TV, online and virtual reality platforms, often skipping movie theatres altogether. Long a holdout against alternative screens, Cannes is shifting with the times in spectacular fashion, by scoring the world premiere of the much-anticipated revival of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, a hit 1990s TV series about sinister supernatural goings-on in a Pacific Northwest lumber town. The festival will unveil the first two episodes of the series, which stars Kyle MacLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn and Sheryl Lee, as a special event outside of the Palme competition. It will do the same for another keenly anticipated TV production, the second season of Jane Campion’s mystery series Top of the Lake, starring Nicole Kidman, Elisabeth Moss and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones).
