Cannabis growers urged to find other pain relief

Growing cannabis for medicinal use is still not legal, a judge told two men in the Nelson District Court. (file photo)A Nelson judge has told two men found growing cannabis for medicinal use that while he had empathy for their situation, they needed to find legal methods of pain relief. In Hutchinson's case, police received information about cannabis being grown at a Motueka address and a search of his home in March revealed 27 cannabis plants between 180cm-200cm growing in a glasshouse along with dried cannabis. His doctor agreed he would be a suitable candidate for medicinal cannabis, but it cost $1000 a month and was unable to afford it on the invalid's benefit. Shaw admitted growing cannabis and in explanation said his partner used it as medication for her health issues.
