The city of Seattle is facing perhaps the most significant election of its history and certainly the most important of the last twenty years. So far, the two candidates with front runner status are former Mayor Mike McGinn and former United States Attorney Jenny Durkan. McGinn, even though he was Mayor for four years, from 2010 to 2014, can claim outsider status. And it would appear, on the surface at least, that the two candidates are following the script when it comes to the established housing policy, Mandatory Inclusionary Zoning (MIZ). The scheme makes increases prices a certainty as new market rate units have to go up to offset the costs of the mandate and taxes, but it was the signature housing policy of Mayor Murray’s administration.
