Cancelled round won't be played

Time will tell who the winners and losers are from last night's decision not to reschedule round five of Dunedin premier rugby. At a Metropolitan Rugby Council meeting last night, club delegates voted 8-1 to leave the round unplayed and award each team two points. The round, which was scheduled for Thursday, was called off after heavy rain left the playing fields sodden. ''No matter what we did, someone would be disadvantaged,'' Metropolitan Rugby Council chairman Gary Wheeler said, adding it was unclear what impact it would have on the competition. Wheeler said the council had looked at other options, including extending the tournament by a week, or playing the games midweek.
